IT'S UP TO YOU - Production and Final Pack.

IT'S UP TO YOU - Production and Final Pack.

Background considerations:- who are you now ? what have you learned? what skills do you have? what do you know? what do you believe?

What information do you need to include , how to promote the information? tone of voice?
type of designer i am and my design aesthetics ,blogs and designers that inspire me .

Experiences have shaped my opinions? inside and outside of uni.
what i have learnt this year , programmes i am confident using.

creative concerns believes , contextual references ( people who inspire me )
list of designers , and design blogs.

What is 'Brand You'? fonts , colours , productions methods to help communicate and enhance your content.
Monochrome colours , geometric shapes , small hand size documents.

I Created a brain storm to get started , i made sub categories to help me break down my work.

Content , Design & things to consider.

My pack:-
The first thing i started to design was the actual pack its self what was going to contain all my information.

I began by making digital mockups-

As my design practice is quite minimal and geometric my favourite shape are triangles so i wanted them to be the main part of my design...

I first began making  a triangle mock up with 3 sides that would fold on to the 'inside' triangle. I printed it out but then realised when it was all opened out it didn't actually make the shape of a triangle so i decided to add another flap.

This template proved to be more successful.. i printed it out small and folded it up to see what it would look like making sure all the triangles were equilateral triangles made them fold perfectly.
After testing my template i realised that i needed to print double sided so i had a information on either side of the document if i wanted to print this specific triangle i would have to of printed it A0 or at least A1 and it was I'm possible to print that size.
I tested each triangle out on an A4 document and  then stuck them to the middle triangle.
i would of put another triangle the same size covering the back so you couldn't see the flaps that were attached. After some consideration i decided it might be to tedious and i didn't want to look messy or unprofessional so i decided to create a new template.

I wanted to some how incorporate triangles into the design. so made a new template that i would add slots into to hold documents..
I liked this idea but i felt it was a bit boring and i could create something better.

I also tried creating a triangle box i found a really nice template and it worked well but after research i wanted my packaging to be flat so if someone was to pick it up they would be able to put it into a folder or back with out it creasing or breaking.
 FINAL PACKAGING DESIGN:-
I decided to make an information style book i thought it would be the most appropriate and it would store more information and be more user friendly.
My first adjustment was the flaps as i positioned them on the outside printing it on to A2 paper i wanted to make sure there was enough room as possible for the actual pages so it was big. so i changed the flaps and put them underneath.

Logo :-

Initial logo designs :-

I didn't want the logo to have my initials just a simple geometric shape that would be memorable like some clothing brands or some of my favourite designers.

I decided to go with the the upside down triangle going through another triangle simple with a black stroke.

I wanted to make my packaging aesthetically pleasing so i decided to create a geometric pattern i could use on my business card as well as the inside of my pack. I wanted this patter to mainly consist of triangles and geometric shapes using monochrome colours.

After creating half of the pattern i used the reflect tool so the opposite side was exactly the same as the top..
This triangle pattern is the pattern used for the inside of pack and on the page of some of the documents.
I began by putting the to rectangle shapes over the pattern and creating a clipping mask.
I repeated this for the opposite side. I didn't want the pattern to be overwhelming and fill the whole inside of the pack.
I printed a prototype to test the pockets and i was really pleased with it the extra length on the flaps at each side worked really well in scoring and folding over so they could be stuck to the back.

I tried the whole inside black as i wanted to use monochrome colours but felt it was to much so i changed one back to white.
I then swapped the colours and made the black side white and the white side a green colour i also added my geometric pattern and felt it worked really well.
I still wasn't completely sure i so made the green section black and added my name and my email address so you could see it as soon as you opened my pack.
I then added the pattern again then i was happy with my final result.
I then started on the outside whatever i put on to the far right hand page would be the front of the first page on the inside as i would be printing double sided.
I wanted the flaps to have the same pattern on the inside as they did on the outside to keep the consistency and i thought i would take full advantage of using the double sided print method.

Using the logo i had created previous i decided to place that in the bottom right hand centre just keeping it nice and simple and memorable.

It worked nicely when i had printed it so i decided to keep that idea , but i added a flap to seel the full package at the end.
I finally made one more adjustment to the design and i made the centre to pages black so that the whole front of the pack wasn't to plain.
Once i had cut out the whole pack i made sure i scored the edges neatly so i would be easy to glue the flaps down.
I scored the in-between the black back woulds because that part folds in woods making the pack a concertina style.
I used super glue to flue the edges of the pack down it worked really well and I'm really pleased with the final touch i also waited till it was put together and used a scalpel to cut of any un-nessaery edges.

Business cards s:-

Initial business card ideas-

I was going to use a greeny yellow colour throughout my design but decided against it as i felt it was not consistant with the rest of my design.
I preferred my geometric pattern i designed across the business card landscape , i think it looks different to usual business cards and would make me want to pick it up.
Again i didn't feel the greeny yellow worked.
I repeated the same white design above and inverted into black and i decided to get both of these printed and have two business cards , they also work well together as a set.

EVERYTHING ELSE TO GO IN THE PACK:-

I printed everything else that was going in pack on a large A2 document with which contained two sets of triangles and two belly bands one concertina booklet , i also put the geometric triangle pattern on the back so when they were all folded up they looked aesthetically pleasing and weren't so plain.

MANIFESTO/POSTER:-

As this pack is personal to me i wanted to create my own manifesto to sum up what I've learnt and what id like to tell other people, i read a really good manifesto by bruce mau and this helped inspire mine.

I wanted to talk about how important your experience is and how valuable your time is and how lucky we are to be in the position we are. I felt this makes my pack more personal.

I used bebas neau typeface though out my whole pack to keep the consistency and used the type in white on to a small black document which is smaller than a5 to put my manifesto on as a little card.
I also added my logo to the bottom right hand corner like the front of my pack but in white on top of the black.

I also decided to make a small poster the same size just to add to my pack with my name my geometric pattern and my blog link.
I decided having my information on the top right corner was the best option having black negative space made my geometric pattern stand out and more bold.

TRIANGLE CONCERTINA'S-

To keep the triangle theme i wanted to have some small triangle concertinas with some information on , in the pack i wanted to include designers that inspire my design practice with there links on to there websites to that people can can see who inspires me.

I first created the 7 triangles and placed them alternatively up and down and put the tittle on the first triangle that is going to be front of the folded concertina so the one you would see first..
To keep the monochrome theme i made each alternative triangle black and will use white typeface.
I put there name at the top and the link underneath. i had to do this the opposite way around on each triangle because as there names where in a larger front they wouldn't of fit doing it the same way for each triangle.
I was really pleased with this idea as its also pliable and easy to read once folded out. i dont think this concertina folds out that well as they are triangles but i wanted to use it so maybe if i was to repeat this process again in another project i will test other methods.
I repeated the same process as i did for the concertina for the one above as for this , but i decided to make small info graphics for the names of the programmes.

I used helvetica to make the letters for but as the dot on the letter i was square i had to make a circle shape to replace the square and made them all white and put them onto black squares.

CONCERTINA BOOKLET-

I decided to make a concertina booklet with information about me personally the first page is the title page with three questions , who am i ? what am i ? what do i have to offer?
I decided to carry on the same aesthetics as the triangles and make every other page black to keep the monochrome theme.
The first page i wrote about me personally and a brief summary of me studying at LCA this year. I used the same typeface.
The next page i spoke about my design aesthetic my style of design and what i aspire to do.

The second from last page i put the main things i have learnt this year and how important evaluating your work is and keeping a blog.
The last page i created a list of blogs that inspire me and blogs that a look at regularly to keep me updated with new designs. I felt this was important as it says something about me what type of work i look at.
They work really nice as a set and fold up to a little booklet that fits in one of the pockets of my pack.

BELLY BANDS -

I created two belly bands one for the concertina book and one for the actual pack, i didn't actually need to use the concertina belly band as the booklet folded up tightly and fit in the pocket well. I put my name and who am i ? on the belly band that will secure the actual pack so its labelled.

Both of the belly bands had the same triangle pattern on the back because they were printed on the same a2 document that had the pattern on the reverse side i decided to do this to keep the consistency.
