alphabet soup - Evaluation OUGD403

Evaluation.....

For alphabet soup brief we had to create 10 letter forms (they could be different , or the same & any letter).10 - 10x10 resolutions each representing a well crafted and clearly presented typographic form.We created these letterforms based on a word we selected from the randomiser. My word was 'BOOM'.

How did i approach it?
I approached my letterforms by using crumbly broken up letterforms and re creating them digitally , printing them out tracing them on to black card and then going over the lines in a white pen . I wanted to explain the word boom by using broken up letters to give the impression of what would be left after an explosion. I also had some of my letters have sound wave like lines across them also another interpretation of the word boom.

What worked?
I found some of the letters worked the ones that were more legible and the letters that had the sound wave lines on looked a lot more appealing than the crumbled letters. For me i find creating the letters digitally a lot easier than drawing them by hand because of the working methods i am used to.

What didn't?
i don't think the letters that i placed stars behind to emphasise the word boom , they didn't really work with the rest of the set. Also i found it quite difficult to trace grey pencil onto black card and i feel although i may of missed some small detail out of some of the letters.

What would i change?
If given the brief again i would maybe try a different approach and i would hand draw the letters. I think planning and development is essential when designing something but i feel as though if i had hand drawn the letterforms i might have ended up with a different result.

What i thought of the crit?
I thought the crit was very useful . I really enjoyed walking around the studio and seeing everyone else's outcome, it was interesting to see what other students had come up with who had the same word as me. The way people look at things and decide which route to take. It was also interesting to see how people approached the task. I really enjoyed this brief and i am pleased with my outcome.
